George Sears: Les Enfant Brillant

GEORGE SEARS: LES ENFANT BRILLIANT

10 reasons why George Sears is the best character in the Metal Gear series and maybe the best from any video game ever

Scott White

  1. He’s a perfect clone of Big Boss, the perfect solider. A mix of darkness and light, good and bad, liquid and solid…he’s Solidus all the way through.

  2. In his gap year before going to college, a teenage George led a unit in the Army of the Devil called the Small Boy Unit. That’s right; while other kids went round Europe or got a part-time job at a swimming pool, Sears was helping fight in the First Liberian Civil War, leading a unit of deadly children.

  3. While leading the Small Boy Unit, George met and named Jack, a young boy that George had also orphaned. While obviously killing Jack’s parents is arguably a bad thing, George quickly took the lad under his wing and by the age of 10, Jack had attained the rank of captain and gained the nicknames “Jack the Ripper” and “White Devil”. By killing young Jack’s parents, George helped him to realise his full potential. Another big tick from me!

  4. In the early 2000s, George Sears became the 43rd President of the United States. While it’s unclear what party he stood for, his policies on nuclear disarmament and anti-eugenics sound pretty right on!

  5. As President, Sears was also a job creator, helping to set up the counter-terrorism group Dead Cell. These proactive go-getters travelled around, testing facilities and providing anti-terrorism training for American soldiers and their allies. Not only that, they were also the best of friends.

  6. If you love Metal Gear Solid 1, here’s a fun fact: George Sears set the whole thing in motion as part of a plan to release himself, and all of us, from the machinations and control of the loathsome Patriots.

  7. Even after he was forced to resign from his position as President of the United States, he refused to retire quietly: instead he decided to steal Arsenal Gear, the MGS version of the baddie’s boat from Tomorrow Never Dies

  8. George, now going by the nom de guerre Solidus Snake, fights and destroys several gigantic mechs on his own, armed only with a cool looking gun and an exoskeleton suit with tentacles. He glides through situations that others struggle with, a true mensh.

  9. He died as he lived, in a mechsuit, with a severed spine, armed with two swords on top of Federal Hall. It’s how he’d have wanted to go.

  10. Except he didn’t die! That’s right, George survived and although technically brain dead, he was used as spare parts to help restore his clone father, Big Boss, back to full life until he succumbed to Foxdie shortly after. It’s how he’d have wanted to go.
